Women’s Outdoor Skills Event Brings Out the Adventurous

An adventurous group of women showed up to hone their outdoor skills at Northeastern Wisconsin Outdoors’ annual Women’s Outdoor Skills Event on August 20, 2011. We had good food, great comradery, and the fun of learning and participating in activities such as shooting and archery clinics, self-defense lessons. Special thanks to our activity leaders, donors, and to the Fox Valley Muzzleloaders for allowing us to use their facilities again this year.

Intro to Archery Brings Out Young Archers

The weather was warm and the arrows were flying freely at the Annual Introduction to Archery Event at Twin Cities Rod and Gun Club. Northeastern Wisconsin Outdoors members once again helped out with this fun archery event. NASP instructors were on hand to provide guidance to the novice archers, while those with more experience could practice to sharpen their skills. Everyone enjoyed a day of shooting, food, friends, prizes and fun.

NEW Outdoors Volunteers Aid Free Fishing Day

Northeast Wisconsin Outdoors volunteers helped at the Free Fishing Day at Jefferson Park in Menasha in early June. Sponsored by Heckrodt Wetlands Reserve and A Fish Tale and More, the fishing clinic was for kids ages 3 to 12. The volunteers had a great time helping the kids with fishing poles, bait, and fish removal. Of course there was the occasional snarl of line or snag, but that was quickly remedied and the kids were back to fishing. Great weather and some cooperative panfish made for a fine day of fishing.

Thatsa Lotsa Pasta and Pie Event a Success!

Our pasta and pie fundraiser in May was a great success. Funds were raised which will be used immediately for our Women’s Outdoor Skills workshop coming in August. NEW Outdoors would like to thank all of the participants and folks who showed up for some delicious food. A special thanks to Scott Yingling and his kitchen crew for helping us serve up the pasta. We would also like to thank Perkins Restaurant and Manderfield’s Home Bakery for the donation of the pies for the event. Pasta Event Planned for May 10th

Northeast Wisconsin Outdoors is planning a pasta fundraiser at Sabre Lanes in Menasha, on Tuesday, May 10th, 2011. We are hoping to feature 12 kinds of pasta and 12 kind of sauces. Details are being worked on. Please check back.

Women’s Outdoor Skills Event Successful

Whoops of joy at wielding 4-foot chainsaws, and shouts of triumph at hitting the mark in the tomahawk toss echoed through the woods near New London on Saturday. There were more clouds than sun, but that was ok, since the gun barrels and Dutch ovens were blazing. Our Women’s Outdoor Skills Event was a success by every measure of the word. Every participant and volunteer had a great time.

Self Defense

Self defense techniques were demonstrated by Black Belt Instructor, Scott Simpson, of Cornerstone Christian Karate, New London, WI. Practical methods to defend against assailants were taught and practiced. Eye gauging, windpipe crushing, verbal assault, and various escape methods were safely practiced. Of course, everyone got to split a board as well.

Trailer Backing

It sounds silly to teach a class on trailering, but what a valuable skill to have! Imagine being able to take the boat out yourself on that gorgeous day when your husband is too busy at work to get away. Mickey Weber and Austin Jackson from NEW Outdoors demonstrated proper methods of maneuvering a trailer. Our participants in this class were empowered after practicing what they learned.

Chainsaw

David Pleshek of Pleshek-Vosters Outdoor Power in Kaukauna, WI lead the chainsaw skills class. The women were instructed with basic operations of this power tool of power tools. Dave demonstrated sawing techniques and safety equipment, then the women were “cut loose” to try some of the equipment themselves. The participants were very excited to try the various saws, working their way up to a monster 4-footer that Dave pulled from the back of his truck. No log pile was too much for these adventurous women.

Dutch Oven/Camp Stove Cookery

Jon Vanderheyden of NEW Outdoors showed our participants just how easy and fun it can be to prepare entire meals, including desserts, in a Dutch oven with a few charcoal briquettes or pieces of wood coal. While the ovens were cooking, Chef Jason Coleman, Fox Valley Technical College instructor, demonstrated easy techniques for preparing meals on a camp stove. And the results were delicious!

Black Powder, Rifles, and Shotguns

Lead by Len Doran of NEW Outdoors, our team of instructors and qualified volunteers introduced the ladies to the pure fun of shooting. The participants had various levels of experience—some with absolutely none. Taught proper safety first, then correct methods of aiming and firing, all of the women were successfully hitting targets very quickly. Participants got to try various types of firearms from black powder rifles to shotguns. All came away with huge smiles.

Talking Turkey

Our resident turkey sage, Len Doran, shared his experience with participants of this seminar. He demonstrated turkey calling techniques, discussed hunting methods, and answered questions.

Tomahawk Toss

Throwing the “hawks” is always a favorite. Once again, led by Len Doran of NEW Outdoors, this activity was a hit with the entire group. Len’s expert instruction enabled many of our participants to split an ace at seven paces. Using Len’s handcrafted hawks, the ladies threw at balloons and playing cards. Nothing is more exhilarating than the sound of the hawk making a solid “thunk!” as it sinks home into the target.

Outdoor Gear

A rep from the Outdoor Outlet in Appleton, WI was on hand later in the day to show the latest in camping and hiking equipment.

NEW Outdoors highlighted on WSCO “The Score” AM 1570

NEW Outdoors was featured on “Living the Outdoors” which aired 5 pm Wed, August 4 on WSCO AM 1570 (FM 93.5). The show, hosted by Mark Drewek, is a weekly program featuring local information related to the outdoors. Mark interviewed Mickey Weber and Andy Olgilive from NEW Outdoors. They spoke about our mission to serve the local community and about the upcoming Women’s Outdoor Skills Event which we will be hosting at the Fox Valley Muzzleloaders Club on August 21. Mickey will be at Gander Mountain in Appleton this Saturday from 1-3 pm with more information about NEW Outdoors and our women’s event.

NEW Outdoors members help out at Intro to Archery Event

A damp morning didn’t prevent a great turnout for the annual Intro to Archery event put on by the Twin Cities Rod & Gun Club. NEW Outdoors members helped out at this event. Organized by Andy Ogilive, President of the Twin Cities Rod & Gun Club and a board member of Northeast Wisconsin Outdoors, the event focused on exposing youth and beginner adults to archery. Over 56 youngsters participated along with many of their adult companions.

National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) instructors were available for instruction and participants were able to get hands-on experience shooting a variety of targets using a range of equipment from compound bows, to recurves, and even long bows.

Every child participant came away with a prize. Several bows were given away, along with arrows, sites, releases, binoculars, gift certificates and many other fun gifts.

Northeast Wisconsin Outdoors, Inc. (NEW Outdoors) is a local, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with no national affiliation. This means all funds are raised locally, and used locally to benefit our communities and charities here in Northeast Wisconsin. We are dedicated to introducing families and individuals to outdoor recreational experiences in Northeast Wisconsin. Through on-going fund raising events, corporate and individual donors, we can provide these fun and educational activities and support fine local community organizations and charities.
